How to Use the New Aadhaar App for Mobile Number and Address Updates: Step-by-Step Guide

The Unique Identification Authority of India has released a new Aadhaar app that lets users update the mobile number linked to Aadhaar directly from a smartphone. The app also supports offline Aadhaar verification and address changes, reducing dependence on physical enrolment centres for many routine updates.

This digital option is intended for people who changed phone numbers, misplaced SIM cards, or avoided enrolment centres due to long queues. Users can now submit a mobile number change request at any time, from any location, using Aadhaar-based login, one-time passwords and face verification within the app.

How to Register and Update Details on the New Aadhaar App

New Aadhaar App Simplifies Mobile Number Update Process

The “Mobile Number Update” section in the Aadhaar app is now active and handles core contact changes. Once the request is filed, UIDAI processes it completely online. Users do not need paper forms, photocopies or in-person appointments for this service, which aims to make Aadhaar maintenance more manageable.

UIDAI states that mobile number updates placed through the Aadhaar app may take up to 30 days to appear in the central records. During this period, users should keep both old and new numbers accessible where possible. The app shows the existing registered number before any change request is confirmed.

How to Download and Register for the New Aadhaar App

Users can change their Aadhaar-linked mobile number through the Aadhaar app by following the steps below:

  1. Launch the Aadhaar app and sign in using Aadhaar authentication.
  2. Head to the "Services" tab available on the home screen.
  3. Tap on the "Update Mobile Number" option.
  4. The app will display the mobile number currently linked with Aadhaar. Enter the new number you wish to register.
  5. Verify the new number by entering the OTP received via SMS.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the required authentication process.
  7. After successful verification, the request will be forwarded to UIDAI for updating the mobile number.

New Aadhaar App Fees and Timelines

Updating a mobile number or address using the Aadhaar app involves a fixed service fee of Rs 75. This payment is made inside the app through the supported digital methods. The process remains fully electronic, so users avoid separate payment counters or receipts at an enrolment centre.

The Aadhaar app also supports address changes for users who have moved homes or need to correct details. Applicants must upload a valid proof of address document, check that the entered information matches the document, and then pay the same Rs 75 fee through the app before final submission.

UIDAI mentions that other demographic updates will be added to the app later, but has not given dates. For now, changes to fingerprints, iris scans and date of birth still need a visit to an Aadhaar enrolment centre. The new app mainly tackles mobile number and address updates through a smartphone-first process.
