Netflix Password Sharing Comes To An End In India: Know New Rules, Transfer Profile, Watch History

Netflix has been curbing the rampant practice of sharing accounts and passwords. The streaming giant has now cracked down on password sharing in India, possibly forcing many Indian users to create new accounts and avail subscriptions.

Netflix has announced that its streaming service users in India will no longer be able to share their accounts with people freely. Let's see how Netflix will crack down on the practice in India. Learning how to create new accounts and retain watch history, profile preferences, and other customizations is now important.

Netflix Password Sharing Comes To An End In India

Netflix Cracks Down On Password Sharing In India

Netflix started cracking down on password-sharing in countries like the US and Canada back in May. Just a day after Netflix reported that it added nearly 6 million new subscribers after introducing the policy, the streaming giant announced that it will no longer allow password sharing in India.

A Netflix account is only meant to be used by one household, the streaming giant mentioned on its official Indian website:

"Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are - at home, on the go, on holiday - and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices"

The new policy will restrict access to a Netflix account to those who are part of your 'Netflix Household'. Netflix will rely on information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine if a device is part of your household.

How To Create A "Netflix Household" And Ensure Uninterrupted Access To Streaming?

Netflix account users must set up a Netflix Household. This is essentially the primary account holder's main location from where they will be using the account from.

To set up the primary location, open the Netflix app and tap on the Get Help option at the bottom right section of the UI. Click on Manage Netflix Household. The app will ask if the device is to be a part of the Netflix Household.

After confirming, Netflix will ask users to verify the account using an OTP delivered to the registered email address or phone number. After confirming the account, Netflix will take users to the page where it will show the devices that are connected to the same internet connection.

Needless to say, only those who use the same internet connection will be able to access the account. Those who are borrowing a Netflix password outside the household will get a notification when they try to log in that prompts them to create their own account.

How To Create New Netflix Account, Transfer Profile, Watch History, And Customizations?

Netflix users who are no longer part of a Netflix Household but want to continue using the service will need to create a new account. However, users can retain all their profile customizations and watch history when they migrate to the newly created account.

To create a new Netflix account, head over to the Netflix app from a smartphone or the Netflix website on a laptop or desktop. Ask the original account holder to sign in.

Head to Settings and tap on the profile that has to be transferred. There should be a 'transfer this profile' option. Trapping the same will take the user to a page that confirms transferring a profile will migrate recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, settings, and more.

Users can transfer the profile to a newly created or preexisting account. Selecting "A New Account" will start the process of creating a new Netflix account, with a new subscription.

It is recommended to create a new account beforehand and choose the desired subscription, before starting the migration process. This will significantly shorten the migration process.
