WhatsApp is one of the most used instant messaging apps, with over 535 million active users (as of January 2025) just in India. This year, the Meta-owned platform announced several features, including the ability to add music to Status, Camera effects, Selfie stickers, and more.

Additionally, the instant messaging app has rolled out a few features which are available to beta testers. It is also working on several new features that will be gradually announced in the coming days. In this article, we've compiled a list of all the upcoming WhatsApp features in 2025.

Upcoming WhatsApp Features 2025

WhatsApp as a Default Messaging and Calling App on iPhone

WhatsApp has recently rolled out a new feature for iOS users, allowing them to set it as the default app for messages and calls. Currently, this feature is available to select beta testers, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.

Once set as the default, WhatsApp will become the primary option in the contacts app, ensuring a seamless experience for messaging and calling. You can check our previous story to learn more about this feature.

AI-powered Profile Photos

WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature that will allow users to generate AI-powered profile photos using Meta AI. Currently, this feature is available to select beta testers, with an official announcement expected soon.

According to the WABetaInfo, this AI-powered option doesn't rely on the user's existing photos. Instead, users can enter a text prompt describing their desired image, and Meta AI will generate a personalized picture based on the input. This feature offers creative flexibility, allowing users to design avatars, artistic representations, or themed profile pictures that match their style. It's particularly useful for those who prefer not to use personal photos but still want a distinctive visual identity.

WhatsApp Multi-account

WhatsApp is currently working on a feature which will allow users to add and manage multiple WhatsApp accounts. This feature is currently under development, which is expected to roll out to beta testers in the coming days.

The multi-account feature is designed to make it easier for users to manage multiple phone numbers, whether for personal, professional, or other purposes. Instead of relying on workarounds like using WhatsApp Business for a secondary number, users will soon be able to switch between multiple accounts seamlessly within a single app. The option to add a second account will be accessible directly from the app settings.

WhatsApp Online Activity for Group Chats

WhatsApp recently rolled out a real-time online activity feature for group chats, which will allow users to see how many group members are currently online. WhatsApp is now testing this feature with some users on the iOS app. It is available to some users and will be rolled out to more people over the coming days.

It's important to note that this feature excludes group members who have chosen to hide their online status in their privacy settings. The online activity overview only displays users who have opted to make their presence visible.

WhatsApp Redesigned Chat Attachment Sheet

The instant messaging app is also working on a redesigned interface for the chat attachment sheet. This feature is currently under development and will be available in a future update.

The new attachment interface will include additional chat sharing options, such as the ability to share documents, locations, and contacts. It will also provide a direct option to open the camera, allowing users to take a photo or record a video without needing to navigate back to the main chat screen. In addition, there will be a date indicator which will display the month and year of the photos and videos currently being viewed.

Moreover, WhatsApp is working on a notification system for chat broadcast messages, a feature to generate AI-powered topics for the Meta AI chatbot, and an advanced chat privacy option to restrict message sharing. These three features are currently in the development stage and are expected to roll out to beta testers in the coming days.
