WhatsApp Gets Passkey Support For Third-Party Password Managers For Secure And Quick Login

WhatsApp now supports Passkeys. After enabling this feature, the instant messaging platform's logging process will be protected by reliable third-party password managers such as 1Password, Google Password Manager, and NordPass.

Passkeys are a secure method of authenticating users without waiting for two-factor authentication such as an OTP via SMS. Let's see how to set up the third-party user authentication process on WhatsApp to further simplify the login process.

Meta Adds Support For Passkeys In WhatsApp Beta App For Android

The latest beta version of the WhatsApp app for Android includes support for Passkeys. The beta version v2.23.20.4 includes this feature, but it should gradually make its way to the stable version soon.

Passkeys are digital user authentication credentials created using password managers. They are saved on the same service and on the same device.

Passkeys are a relatively new way of logging into a website or application account without entering a password. Passkeys offer enhanced security besides eliminating the need to remember complex passwords.

WhatsApp Gets Passkey Support For Third-Party Password Managers

For WhatsApp, the Passkey feature is accessible in WhatsApp Settings > Account > Passkeys. Users need to tap on Create a Passkey to begin. However, prior to starting the process of creating a passkey, users need to set up any one of their preferred password managers such as 1Password, Google Password Manager, or NordPass.

WhatsApp will ask users to choose a password manager on the device that has them installed. After selecting the desired app, WhatsApp will save the Passkey to that selected password manager.

How To Use Passkey Feature To Log Into WhatsApp Without Any Password Or OTP?

WhatsApp users often set up complex authentications to thwart eavesdropping. The Passkey feature will uphold the backend complexity but offer simplicity to users.

Whenever a user, with Passkey enabled, wants to sign into WhatsApp, they can just provide the app with the Passkey stored in the password manager by authenticating their identity with biometrics, PIN, or pattern.

WhatsApp already supports two-factor authentication. However, this method has to wait for an OTP that is usually delivered via an SMS.

The Passkeys feature eliminates the need to wait for an OTP and enter it manually. Additionally, This feature allows users to sign into WhatsApp on their Android smartphone or tablet even when the device has no cellular network.
