Impact Of App Store Ecosystem In India
A critical insight from the study is the substantial portion of revenue, over 94%, that goes directly to developers and businesses without Apple taking any commission. This finding underscores the lucrative nature of the App Store for India's developers, who have seen their global earnings triple over the past five years. Such growth reflects the App Store's role in providing a global platform that extends the reach of developers and entrepreneurs, enabling them to tap into international markets effectively.
Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, expressed excitement about the App Store's role in fueling the success of developers in India and globally, stating, "The App Store has been an economic miracle for developers in India and all around the world, and we're thrilled to support their work." Cook further highlighted the study's emphasis on India's vibrant app economy and pledged continued investment in the success of developers of all scales, aiming to foster apps that significantly impact and enhance users' lives.
The research conducted by Professor Pingali delves into various factors propelling the App Store ecosystem in India. It notes a surge in app usage across multiple sectors, including food delivery, travel, gaming, entertainment, and education. In 2024, the ecosystem saw developers rake in ₹38,906 crore ($4.65 billion) from the sale of physical goods and services, alongside substantial earnings from in-app advertising and digital goods and services.
Since its inception over 15 years ago, the App Store has revolutionized how developers monetize their creations, paving the way for a dynamic and prosperous ecosystem. In 2024, Indian developers thrived in diverse app categories, such as games, health and fitness, lifestyle, and utilities, showcasing the wide array of opportunities available within the App Store.
The international appeal of Indian developers is evident, with approximately 80% of their App Store earnings originating from outside India in 2024. Additionally, a significant majority of developers operated on multiple storefronts, enhancing their global presence. The year also marked a milestone with apps from India-based developers being downloaded over 755 million times worldwide through the App Store, spotlighting their global appeal and recognition.
Moreover, the App Store has facilitated the success of Indian developers not just internationally but also within the local market. Over the last five years, downloads by Indian users have more than tripled, with earnings from these users increasing fivefold.
Supporting smaller developers has been a key aspect of Apple's strategy, with the App Store earnings of small developers witnessing a 74% increase between 2021 and 2024. Initiatives like the App Store Small Business Program have played a crucial role in this growth by offering reduced commission rates to small developers.
Apple's commitment to nurturing the app development ecosystem in India is strong. The company has actively engaged with developers to enhance their skills. The Apple Developer Center in Bengaluru stands as a testament to this commitment, where Apple engineers offer personalized support to developers across India.
