Apple Introduces Easier Monthly Payments with an Unexpected 12-Month Catch

Apple is preparing a new App Store subscription payment option that breaks annual plans into monthly instalments. The feature will launch globally in May 2026 through software updates, but Apple confirmed it will not reach users in the United States and Singapore when it first appears.

The model lets customers sign up for a full 12‑month plan while spreading payments across the year. Users may cancel whenever they wish, yet the subscription will stay active and bill monthly until the 12‑month commitment ends, after which renewals can be stopped.

Apple’s Latest Subscription Plans Aren’t as Flexible as They Seem

How the New App Store Subscription Instalments Work

Apple said the system keeps access to discounted annual subscription pricing while dropping the need for one large upfront payment. Developers will be able to list yearly App Store subscription plans that charge every month, which Apple expects will help more people try higher priced apps and services.

Explaining the change for developers, Apple wrote: "Today, we're introducing a new way that people can pay for your auto-renewable subscriptions on the App Store: monthly subscriptions with a 12-month commitment. This new payment option allows you to offer subscribers more affordable options," and positioned it as an extra billing choice.

Apple will add transparency tools inside Apple Account settings for this App Store subscription option. Users will see how many monthly payments are already completed, how many remain in the 12‑month term, and when renewals are scheduled. Email alerts and optional push notifications will warn about upcoming charges before the commitment refreshes.

Impact on Users and Developers

The move is expected to help customers who avoid big annual payments, especially in price‑sensitive markets. For many people, paying smaller monthly amounts for the same App Store subscription discount can lower entry barriers. Developers, meanwhile, gain longer commitments that may lift retention and reduce subscription churn over time.

The subscription option will arrive alongside several operating system updates, including iOS 26.5 for iPhone, iPadOS 26.5 for iPad, macOS Tahoe 26.5 for Mac, tvOS 26.5 for Apple TV, and visionOS 26.5 for Vision Pro. Users in most regions will see the feature once these versions become available.

Apple has not explained why the United States and Singapore are excluded at launch, though the company described the instalment plan as a global feature. The firm has framed the approach as a balance between flexible payments for users and predictable revenue for developers that rely on App Store subscription income.

The App Store subscription instalment feature keeps existing annual discounts while changing how users pay and track them. With monthly billing, clear status tools, and alert systems, Apple is reshaping how long‑term digital services are managed, even as customers in the United States and Singapore wait for access.
