Apple Pay India Launch Timeline Revealed: Why UPI Support May Not Be Available at First

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch Apple Pay in India later this year, with the service expected to arrive in late September or early October 2026. However, the initial rollout could look very different from what Indian iPhone users might expect. According to reports, Apple Pay may launch with credit card support but without UPI, limiting its functionality in one of the world's largest digital payment markets.

Apple is currently negotiating with major Indian banks and financial institutions to establish the necessary partnerships for the service. The company also needs to complete the regulatory and banking integrations required to operate Apple Pay in India.

Apple Pay May Finally Launch in India This Year, But There’s a Catch

Apple Pay India May Support Visa and Mastercard Credit Cards

At launch, Apple Pay in India is expected to support eligible Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Users will be able to add their supported cards to the Apple Wallet app on compatible iPhones.

Once configured, users can make contactless payments by bringing their iPhone close to an NFC-enabled payment terminal. Authentication can be completed using Face ID or Touch ID, depending on the device.

Contactless card payments are already widely supported across India's modern retail infrastructure. Supermarkets, restaurants, shopping malls and other organised retailers increasingly use point-of-sale terminals that support tap-and-pay transactions.

Apple Pay could therefore provide iPhone users with a more convenient alternative to carrying physical credit cards.

Apple Pay UPI Support Could Be Missing at Launch

The biggest limitation could be the absence of UPI support in Apple Pay India.

UPI has become the dominant digital payment system in India, powering everything from online purchases and bill payments to small transactions at local shops. Apps such as Google Pay and PhonePe have built their services around UPI, making it an essential part of everyday payments for millions of Indians.

Apple Pay, however, may initially operate only as a digital wallet for credit cards. This means users may not be able to scan UPI QR codes or make direct UPI payments through Apple Wallet.

Apple reportedly still needs to finalise agreements with an Indian sponsor bank and obtain the necessary approvals from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) before UPI functionality can be introduced.

Apple and Indian Banks Are Negotiating Transaction Fees

Transaction fees are reportedly another important part of Apple's negotiations with Indian banks.

Apple is said to be seeking around 15 to 20 basis points per transaction, while some Indian card issuers are pushing for a lower rate of approximately 10 basis points. A basis point equals 0.01 percent, meaning these fees represent a small percentage of each transaction but could become significant at scale.

The fees are expected to be paid by participating banks rather than directly by consumers. Banks may nevertheless see Apple Pay as an attractive proposition because it can help them reach affluent iPhone users who typically have higher spending power.

How Apple Pay Will Work in India

Apple Pay will use the NFC hardware built into compatible iPhones for contactless payments. Users can select their stored credit card, authenticate the transaction and tap their iPhone against a supported payment terminal.

Apple's tokenisation technology also means merchants do not receive the user's actual card number during a transaction, adding an additional layer of security.

Apple has not yet officially confirmed the Apple Pay India launch date, supported banks or final feature set. If the reported September or October 2026 timeline holds, more details could emerge as Apple finalises its partnerships with Indian financial institutions.

For Indian iPhone users, Apple Pay could make credit card payments significantly more convenient. However, without UPI support, the service is unlikely to replace the payment apps consumers currently rely on for everyday transactions.
