Apple’s Mail App is Reportedly Getting an AI-Powered Smart Replies Feature at WWDC 2024

Apple is set to introduce new AI features to its native Mail app, according to a recent report. The Smart Replies feature will use artificial intelligence to generate instant email responses. This feature will be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 on June 10.

Siri will also get the Smart Replies feature, enabling it to generate and reply to emails on behalf of users. These upgrades are part of Apple's Project BlackPearl. According to AppleInsider, the Mail app will see major enhancements.

AI-Powered Smart Replies

The Smart Replies feature aims to help users respond to emails quickly by generating replies. It can change the tone of the responses upon request. For example, users can choose a professional, conversational, or friendly tone for their replies.

Additionally, the pre-release version of Apple's upcoming operating systems showed more enhancements for the Mail app. The search results will include data from Contacts, locations, and on-device documents. This will allow for a more nuanced search function in the Mail app.

AI-Based Mail Categorization

The Mail app is expected to categorize emails based on their text. This machine learning feature will analyze emails and classify them into six predefined categories: Commerce, News, Other, Promotions, Social, and Transactions. This will be useful for those who receive numerous emails.

Official email accounts of organizations may also benefit from this categorization. The Smart Replies and email categorization features will also be added to Siri, allowing users to respond to emails verbally with AI-generated content.

Apple's AI-led upgrades aim to make email management more efficient. With Siri's added capabilities, users will have greater control over their email communication. These features are powered by Apple's Ajax large language model (LLM), an on-device AI model yet to be announced.
