Apple says new iOS apps must be built using iOS 11 SDK
While the exact reason is not clear at the moment, this is probably to push the usage of iOS 11, which has features such as Core ML, SiriKit, and ARKit.
Apple has announced that iOS app developers are now required to make apps that support the Super Retina display of iPhone X. Coming into effect from April 2018, apps without the support for iPhone X's Super Retina display won't be accepted in the App Store. The Cupertino-based tech giant has apparently made this move to propel the new apps that are exclusive to the iPhone X.
First spotted by 9to5Mac, Apple has informed the developers about the change via an email. According to the email, all new iOS apps (even the universal ones) that are submitted to the App Store have to carry support for the Super Retina display starting from April 2018.
Furthermore, the iOS apps submitted to the App Store have to be built using the iOS 11 SDK. While the exact reason is not clear at the moment, this is probably to push the usage of iOS 11, which has features such as Core ML, SiriKit, and ARKit. However, developers are not bound to add support for any new iOS features to their apps. So the new app could retain some simple functionality.
"Starting April 2018, all new iOS apps submitted to the App Store must be built with the iOS 11 SDK, included in Xcode 9 or later. All new apps for iPhone, including universal apps, must support the Super Retina display of iPhone X," said the guidelines. You can also find the guidelines on Apple's Developer site.
Apple had earlier informed iOS app developers to make necessary changes to support the notch and edge-to-edge display of its latest flagship. Besides this, the company has also stopped signing three previous versions of its mobile Operating System iOS following the release of iOS 11.2.5.
In simpler words, iPhone users are no longer allowed to downgrade to a lower version of iOS after installing a new version on their devices. The iPhone maker has particularly stopped signing iOS 11.2, iOS 11.2.1 and iOS 11.2.2 for all its devices. So iPhone So iPhone users now have no choice but to upgrade to the latest version.
