Apple to Allow Direct iOS App Downloads From Developer Websites in the EU

Apple has made a significant announcement regarding iOS app installation in the European Union (EU). Soon, developers will have the option to distribute their iOS apps directly from their own websites, a move aimed at complying with the EU's new Digital Markets Act (DMA). This update is expected to roll out in a software update slated for the spring of this year, following closely on the heels of the iOS 17.4 release.

Web Distribution of iOS Apps Under Strict Conditions

The decision to allow web distribution of iOS apps provides developers with an alternative means to reach users, bypassing the need for third-party app stores. However, Apple has set strict criteria for developers wishing to utilize this option. Only developers who are part of the Apple Developer Program and have maintained good standing for at least two continuous years will be eligible. Additionally, their apps must have achieved more than one million first annual installs on iOS within the EU in the preceding year.

Apps distributed via the web will need to adhere to the same Notarization requirements as those on the App Store, ensuring the platform's integrity remains intact. Developers will also be granted access to essential APIs for system functionality integration and user data management. Importantly, web distribution is limited to the developer's registered domain in App Store Connect.

Cost Implications and User Approval Process

Developers taking advantage of web distribution will incur a Core Technology Fee (CTF), set at EUR 0.50 for each install exceeding one million in the past 12 months. However, non-profit organizations, accredited educational institutions, and government entities in the EU may apply for a fee waiver.

From a user perspective, installing apps from the web will require prior approval of the developer in iOS settings. A system sheet displaying app information, screenshots, and age ratings will be shown during installation, mirroring the App Store experience.

Future iOS Updates and Regional Availability

Beyond web app distribution, Apple is working on facilitating iPhone-to-Android transfers and allowing users to change their default browsers. These updates, expected later this year, will likely be available exclusively within the EU.

The introduction of web distribution and other upcoming features mark important changes for iOS users and developers in the EU. Whether these updates will be extended to other regions remains uncertain. Apple's efforts to comply with the DMA showcase a step towards more flexible app distribution and user choice within the EU.
