Elon Musk Plans to Purge Inactive Accounts on Twitter

Elon Musk is not done with Twitter as yet. Right after the blue tickmark controversy slowly settled down, Elon Musk seems to be on track with his next course of action for Twitter - purging inactive accounts.

Elon Musk took to Twitter to announce that user accounts that haven't had any activity for several years would be purged, and following this, active users were likely to see a drop in their number of followers.

Elon Musk Plans to Purge Inactive Accounts on Twitter

Twitter already has an Inactive Account Policy in place wherein users are encouraged to keep their accounts active once every 30 days at least to avoid being removed. So, it's not clear if Elon Musk's new strategy is something entirely different from what's already in order.

Also, Musk's tweet reads that the purging would be done for accounts that have been inactive for "several years" so it's also not immediately clear as to how many years is he indicating. There is also no information as to when the purging could begin.

Elon Musk has indicated in the past that he intends to get rid of Twitter bots. While purging dubious Twitter accounts may help get rid of the same, the question remains how would the social-media company address accounts of those who've died and aren't being handled by their relatives?

Getting rid of every inactive account on Twitter could drastically change the landscape of the micro-blogging site.

Elon Musk announced this decision to purge Twitter accounts last year in December after he took over the micro-blogging site. He had even mentioned quite specifically back then, that Twitter would get rid of 1.5 billion accounts.

Meanwhile, amid Twitter's never-ending hot flashes, people have begun switching loyalties to Bluesky, an upcoming Twitter alternative, started by former CEO and co-founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey.

Although quite early to tell for certain, Bluesky promises to be everything that Twitter is not. Bluesky is based on an AT Protocol, an open-source framework for building social apps. With Twitter tightening its control over accounts and behavior, Bluesky promises to offer flexibility to users.

Bluesky is currently on an invite-only basis, so you might have to wait a bit before you get to experience this new social media site.
