Google Announces Shift from Fitbit to Google Health: AI Health Coach Debuts in India

Google is overhauling its health platform, shifting users from the Fitbit app to the new Google Health app and introducing Google Health Coach as a paid service. From 19 May, the Coach moves out of Public Preview and rolls out worldwide for Google Health Premium subscribers, including eligible Fitbit and Pixel Watch users.

Google Health Coach will be bundled with different Google AI plans and a standalone Google Health Premium subscription in India. Pricing is set at Rs. 99 per month or Rs. 999 per year. Support for more wearables is planned, and users without compatible devices can still download the app and receive a notification when access is ready.

Google Health Coach Features

At the centre of the Google Health Coach experience is a redesigned Today tab within the Google Health app. This screen works as the base for proactive guidance, going beyond basic history logs. The Coach analyses patterns, filters noisy data, looks ahead, and sends timely nudges that match the goals users have chosen.

Google says that it has designed this experience around the fundamental belief that effective coaching must be built on a foundation of true understanding and appreciation for you and your unique goals. The company links that idea to how the Coach surfaces advice, claiming that better context leads to more useful, personalised suggestions.

When users first set up Google Health Coach, they complete a guided onboarding conversation instead of a simple form. During this chat, they can outline specific health or fitness goals, daily schedules, available equipment, any current injuries, and wider lifestyle details. This information shapes the first version of the plan and the type of check-ins offered.

The relationship with Google Health Coach is designed to adapt over time rather than lock users into fixed targets. People can return to the conversation interface and change priorities whenever routines shift. The Coach reworks future guidance immediately, updating training suggestions, rest advice, or other recommendations in line with the new direction.

Always-on Support and Data Sources

Support from Google Health Coach is available throughout the day instead of at set moments. Users can tap an “Ask Coach” option at any time to request advice or clarity. The system answers on demand, so people do not wait for scheduled nudges before getting help with a question about activity, rest, or habits.

To shape these responses, Google Health Coach draws on several data types that users choose to share. Inputs include fitness and sleep metrics from wearables, nutrition and cycle tracking records, environmental signals such as location and local weather, and personal medical records. Greater context allows the Coach to refine suggestions for each individual situation.

App Experience and Feedback

Google states that long-term testing and user feedback have guided many of the design decisions behind Google Health Coach and the new Google Health app. The team has focused on quick, low-effort interactions, adding quick-reply chips so people can respond or adjust plans with a tap. These tools aim to make regular check-ins simpler and more consistent.

The shift from the Fitbit app to the Google Health app marks a wider consolidation of Google’s health services, placing Google Health Coach at the core. With pricing set for India, global rollout scheduled from 19 May, and early access for Fitbit and Pixel Watch users, Google is positioning the Coach as a central hub for everyday health guidance.
