Google Maps to Introduce Exact Locations of Speed Breakers in Pune Soon
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has recently made a significant announcement aimed at enhancing road safety within the city. In a recent meeting focusing on road safety measures, the PMC decided to collaborate with Google Maps to provide users with information about the location of speed breakers across Pune.
Addressing Road Safety Concerns
With over 2500 speed breakers scattered throughout Pune, these road features, intended to control speeding in specific areas, often become a cause of accidents due to factors such as poor visibility. Recognizing the need to address this issue, the PMC has taken the initiative to share the precise location of each speed breaker with Google Maps.

Integration with Navigation Apps
The PMC's decision aligns with the widespread use of navigation apps, such as Google Maps, by ordinary citizens, cab drivers, and ride-sharing services.
Additionally, many modern vehicles are equipped with built-in GPS or similar mapping systems. By leveraging this technology, the PMC aims to proactively prevent accidents and discomfort caused by speed breakers.
The User Experience
Once implemented, users of Google Maps can expect real-time warnings about upcoming speed breakers during their journeys. Similar to existing prompts for traffic congestion, toll plazas, and sharp turns, this feature is anticipated to enhance road safety and make driving in Pune a smoother experience.
However, neither the PMC nor Google has provided a specific timeline for the implementation and release of this feature.
PMC's Commitment to Road Safety
In a parallel development, the PMC, along with the road department and traffic management department, discussed plans to map speed breakers on Google Maps during their recent meeting. This application is seen as a proactive step to assist residents and the government in creating safer roadways.
Concerns About Speed Breaker Standards
While speed breakers are essential for road safety, concerns have been raised about their installation without adhering to prescribed standards. The PMC acknowledges the importance of addressing this issue and plans to share information about all 2500 speed breakers with GPS companies.
Commuter Benefits
The sharing of speed breaker information with GPS companies is expected to benefit commuters by allowing them to pinpoint the exact placement of speed breakers on specific roads. This proactive approach aims to reduce accidents, maintain appropriate vehicle speeds, and provide a smoother driving experience.
Commendations and Criticisms
Residents have expressed positive views on the initiative, emphasizing the practicality of sharing speed breaker information through widely used navigation apps. However, some critics argue that the PMC should have implemented similar measures earlier, considering previous recommendations for a "traffic calming policy."
As Pune takes a pioneering step in showing speed breaker locations on Google Maps, other metropolitan areas in India may follow suit to enhance road safety.
