Google Phasing Out Google Podcasts in Favor of YouTube Music

In a strategic move aimed at strengthening its foothold in the podcasting arena, Google has announced its decision to discontinue the Google Podcasts app by 2024. This shift is part of Google's broader strategy to transition its podcasting audience to YouTube Music, aligning with the changing preferences of users.

YouTube Music: The New Podcast Destination

Google's decision to phase out Google Podcasts is underpinned by its commitment to make YouTube Music a more prominent and versatile platform for podcast enthusiasts. The move to YouTube Music allows users to seamlessly switch between audio and video podcast versions, listen offline, and explore a thriving podcast community. This mirrors the approach adopted by competitors like Spotify, which has been enhancing the podcasting experience with video support and community features like Q&As and polls.

The data reinforces this shift in user behavior, with Edison's research indicating that 23% of weekly podcast users in the U.S. favor YouTube as their primary podcast platform, in stark contrast to the mere 4% who opt for Google Podcasts.

Smoother Transition for Users

To facilitate the transition from Google Podcasts to YouTube Music, Google plans to introduce a migration tool that will make it easier for existing users to switch platforms seamlessly. This tool will be accompanied by the ability to add podcast RSS feeds to their YouTube Music library, including shows not currently hosted on YouTube. While these migration tools are not yet available, Google intends to roll them out in the coming months, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free transition for users.

Moreover, Google will support the option for users to download an OPML file containing their show subscriptions from Google Podcasts. This file can then be uploaded to other podcasting apps that support importing, offering users the flexibility to continue enjoying their favorite podcasts on their preferred platforms.

Google's Ongoing Transition Strategy

Google's move to phase out Google Podcasts is part of its broader strategy to position YouTube Music as a formidable competitor to established streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. This transition strategy echoes a similar move made in 2020 when Google shifted music listeners from Google Play Music to YouTube Music ahead of the former's shutdown. However, podcasting presents unique challenges due to the significant number of users who already rely on YouTube for podcast consumption.

Looking to the Future

In its announcement, Google emphasized its commitment to being transparent with its users and podcasters throughout this transition process. The company is keen on building a single destination within YouTube Music that not only caters to listeners but also rewards creators and artists, ultimately delivering an exceptional podcasting experience.
