New Google Photos Feature Lets You Keep Files on Your Phone While Freeing Up Cloud Storage
Managing a growing photo library has always been a balancing act for users of Google Photos. The need to separate cloud backups from local device storage has led to frustrations, but Google is introducing a solution.
The newly launched Undo Backup feature is now available to iOS users, giving them greater control over what gets stored in the cloud. Android users can expect the update soon.

What Is Undo Backup?
Undo Backup allows users to remove their photos and videos from Google Photos' cloud storage while retaining the files on their device. This feature eliminates the previous risk of losing a file completely when deleted from the cloud. Users who want to keep certain media private or reduce cloud storage usage now have an option that doesn't require sacrificing access to their files on their devices.
This functionality is particularly useful for managing storage limits or maintaining privacy, offering a middle ground between full cloud sync and total deletion.
How to Use Undo Backup
Setting up Undo Backup is straightforward. Users can activate it directly from the Google Photos app by following these steps:
- Open the Google Photos app on your device.
- Tap your profile picture or initials in the upper-right corner.
- Navigate to Google Photos settings and select Backup.
- Tap Undo backup for this device.
- Confirm your choice by checking the disclaimer box stating that photos and videos will be deleted from Google Photos but remain on the device.
- Click Delete Google Photos backup to finalize the process.
After using this feature, the backup function will automatically be disabled for the device. If you decide to enable cloud backups again, you will need to repeat the process.
Addressing a Long-Standing Frustration
This update resolves one of the most common complaints about Google Photos-the inability to separate cloud and local photo management. Previously, deleting a file from the app risked losing it entirely, creating an all-or-nothing scenario that frustrated users.
By introducing this flexibility, Google Photos aligns better with user expectations for file management, allowing individuals to reduce unnecessary cloud storage consumption while maintaining a secure local copy of their files.
What's Next for Android Users?
For now, Undo Backup is exclusive to iOS devices, but Android support is expected soon. Although Google hasn't provided an exact release date, the company's commitment to rolling out the feature for both platforms suggests it will be widely available in the coming months.
