Google Wallet Users In India Can Now Save Their Aadhaar Digitally

Carrying a physical wallet feels a little less necessary with every passing year.

First, cards moved to phones. Then boarding passes. Event tickets too. Now, Google wants your Aadhaar credentials there as well.

Google has announced that users in India can now save their Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials directly inside Google Wallet. The feature is part of Google’s partnership with UIDAI and is designed to make identity verification quicker across supported apps and services.

In simple terms, instead of repeatedly entering personal details or pulling out physical documents, users can verify themselves through their phone.

Where This Could Actually Be Useful

Google is starting with a few real-world partners instead of rolling this out with vague promises.

If you're booking movie tickets through PVR INOX, you’ll be able to verify your age more quickly and access rewards.

On BharatMatrimony, the feature will help verify user profiles.

If you use Atlys for visa applications, your details can be auto-filled through verified credentials.

Google also said support is coming soon for Mygate, where it can help verify delivery or service staff entering residential communities.

Another upcoming partner is Snabbit, where service providers can be verified more easily.

These are pretty everyday use cases, which makes the rollout feel more practical than experimental.

Google Says Privacy Is Built In

This is Aadhaar, so privacy concerns were always going to be part of the conversation.

Google says the system uses something called selective disclosure, which basically means only relevant information gets shared during verification.

So if a service only needs age verification, it won’t get access to unnecessary personal details.

That sounds good on paper, but adoption will likely depend on how comfortable users feel storing identity credentials on their phones.
