Google Wallet App Launched in India for Android Users: Here’s How it is Different from Google Pay

Google launched its Google Wallet app in India on Wednesday, introducing a convenient way for users to digitally store vital documents and access various services. This app enables the storage of boarding passes, loyalty and gift cards, event passes, car keys, and transit tickets.

It even has the capability to digitize physical documents for easy retrieval. Despite this launch, Google has confirmed that the Google Wallet app will function alongside the existing GPay app, which focuses on facilitating payments through the National Payments Corporation of India's (NPCI) Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and supported bank cards.

Google Wallet Announced in India

The announcement was made at a launch event, revealing that Android smartphone users can download the Google Wallet app from the Google Play Store. This move comes after the app was spotted on the Play Store last month, indicating its imminent arrival in India.

Google Wallet is not just a storage solution but a platform that supports various functionalities including flight tickets, loyalty cards, and more, thanks to partnerships with over 20 companies in India such as PVR, Inox, Air India, and Flipkart. Google's collaboration extends to a wide array of services, allowing users to add movie and event tickets from PVR and Inox directly into Google Wallet.

Flight enthusiasts can also digitize their boarding passes from Air India and several other airlines through booking platforms like MakeMyTrip. The app also supports public transit options, offering digital access to transit cards for metros and bus services across several cities.

Digitizing Documents and More

For individuals who prefer a digital-first lifestyle, Google Wallet facilitates the scanning of QR codes and barcodes on physical documents, transforming them into accessible digital formats.

This feature is extended to corporate badges as well, with partnerships in place to support integration. Moreover, if Gmail's smart personalization settings are activated, Google Wallet can automatically display tickets and bookings directly in the app.

Google Wallet vs Google Pay

It's crucial to note the distinct roles of Google Wallet and Google Pay in India. Unlike in some global markets where Google has merged its payment apps, in India, the two apps will operate independently.

Google Wallet will cater to the storage and access of documents and passes, while Google Pay will continue to handle UPI and contactless payments. This strategic decision ensures users in India have dedicated platforms for their specific needs, enhancing the convenience and efficiency of digital transactions and storage solutions.
