Google's RCS Messaging Hits 1 Billion Users: Unveils New Features for Messages App
Google proudly declared a significant achievement for its RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging platform, surpassing the 1 billion monthly active users mark. This comes as a major stride forward since Google's earlier struggles to garner RCS support from US carriers.
Messages App Enhancements: 7 New Features

To celebrate this milestone, Google is rolling out seven new features for its Messages app. While RCS aims to replace the traditional SMS and MMS, it still utilizes them as backups. The features include:
Photomoji: Transform Photos into Reactions
The Photomoji feature employs on-device Google AI to turn photos into reactions. Users can store these creations in a dedicated tab for future use, fostering a more expressive messaging experience.
Voice Moods: Animated Emoji for Voice Messages
Voice Moods introduces animated emoji overlaid on voice messages, enhancing the visual expression of feelings. Improved voice message bitrate and sampling rate contribute to better-perceived quality.
Screen Effects: Dynamic Screen Animations
Screen Effects trigger vibrant animations when specific phrases like "it's snowing" or "I love you" are typed. Google has hidden over 15 effects, inviting users to explore and discover them.
Custom Bubbles: Personalize Message Bubbles
Custom Bubbles allow users to customize the color and background of message bubbles, enabling a personalized touch to conversations-a feature not available on iMessage.
Reaction Effects: Animated Reactions
Reaction Effects inject life into conversations by animating reactions over messages. This feature works with the ten most popular emoji, adding a dynamic element to user interactions.
Animated Emoji: Visual Effects for Specific Emoji
Animated Emoji introduces visual effects triggered when sending specific emoji, reminiscent of similar features in other messaging apps like WhatsApp.
Profiles: Personalize Profile Information
Profiles enable users to personalize their profile name and picture associated with their phone number. This helps in group chats, ensuring users can identify each member easily.
Availability
However, the excitement comes with a caveat. These new features will initially be available in the beta version of Messages, with an unspecified timeline for a stable channel release.
The Future of RCS
Google anticipates broader RCS adoption when Apple incorporates the industry-standard version into its iOS Messages app, expected next year. This move will bring encryption, read receipts, typing indicators, and improved media sharing to cross-platform messaging between Android and iPhone users.
