Instagram Set to Unleash its Text-Based Twitter Rival Soon

|

Instagram is set to enter the world of text-based conversations with the upcoming launch of a new app that bears a resemblance to Twitter's functionality. This move by the popular social media platform, led by Meta, is expected to intensify the rivalry between Meta and Twitter.

The news has sparked excitement and competition, with the newly appointed CEO of Twitter, Linda Yaccarino, boldly stating, "Game on!"

Integration of the Text-Based App Into Instagram

The unique aspect of Instagram's text-based app is its integration with the existing Instagram platform while also being a standalone application. Users will have the ability to utilize their existing Instagram handles on the new app, and their verified badges will be carried over seamlessly.

As users make the transition, their Instagram followers will receive notifications, encouraging them to follow their favorite accounts on the new platform. Similarly, users will have the freedom to follow the same accounts they currently follow on Instagram.

The App Could Be Named Barcelona

In a recent edition of Lia's ICYMI substack newsletter, intriguing details about Instagram's text-based app were revealed. The app is currently codenamed P92 or Project 92, and interestingly, the team has internally referred to it as "Barcelona," which may be a potential name for the app upon its release.

Character Limit of 500 for Posts, Emphasizing Privacy Controls

The upcoming text-based app will empower users to express themselves using text, links, photos, and videos up to five minutes long in their posts. However, unlike Twitter's 10,000 character limit for Blue users, Instagram's app is expected to have a more concise character limit of 500. This focus on brevity is accompanied by a strong emphasis on privacy.

Users will have granular control over who can respond to their posts or mention them on the platform. Additionally, any blocked accounts from Instagram will automatically carry over to the new app, ensuring a consistent user experience.

Meta Approaching Prominent Figures to Test the App

Reports indicate that Meta is actively engaging with prominent influencers and celebrities, inviting them to be early adopters of Instagram's text-based app. This strategy allows influencers and celebrities to test the app and provide valuable feedback before it becomes available to the general public. The involvement of these influential figures is expected to generate early excitement and encourage a smooth onboarding experience for new users.

Compatibility With Other Apps

During one of the briefings, a creator who attended the session disclosed that Instagram's text-based app will have compatibility with other popular apps, including Mastodon. This interoperability expands the app's reach and offers users more flexibility in their interactions with different platforms.

Furthermore, a leaked image suggests that the app will feature a color theme similar to the original Instagram app, creating a sense of familiarity for users transitioning to the new platform.

Monetization Plans for the Platform

Interestingly, Instagram's text-based app is currently not planning to monetize the platform. This implies that, at least initially, users may not encounter any advertisements while engaging with the app.

The launch of Instagram's text-based app is slated to take place this summer, in just a few weeks.
