Instagram Teen Accounts Now Default to PG-13, Offering Parents More Control
Meta has announced that Instagram will now guide Teen Accounts using PG-13 movie ratings by default. This means that the content teens see on Instagram will be similar to what they might encounter in a PG-13 film. Teens under 18 will automatically be placed into an updated 13+ setting, and they cannot opt out without parental consent.
Instagram is also introducing a new, stricter setting called 'Limited Content' for parents who prefer more control over their teen's experience. This setting will filter additional content from the Teen Account experience and restrict teens' ability to see or interact with comments under posts. Starting next year, it will further limit AI conversations teens can have.

Enhanced Protections for Teen Accounts
The platform has refined its age-appropriate guidelines to hide more potentially inappropriate content in the updated default 13+ content setting. Teens won't be able to follow accounts that share age-inappropriate content or if their name or bio suggests unsuitability for teens. If they already follow such accounts, they won't see or interact with their content, send DMs, or view comments under posts.
Instagram has also blocked search terms related to sensitive topics like suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders. Now, it will block teens from seeing results for a broader range of mature search terms such as 'alcohol' or 'gore,' ensuring these terms remain blocked even if misspelled.
Content Experience and AI Adjustments
Teens should not encounter content against updated guidelines in recommendations like Explore, Reels, Feed, and Stories—even when shared by someone they follow—or in comments. If someone sends a link to such content in DMs, teens won't be able to open it. The AI experiences for teens are also guided by PG-13 ratings by default to prevent age-inappropriate responses.
Instagram is testing a new feature allowing parents using supervision tools to flag any post they believe should be hidden from teens and explain why. If these posts aren't already hidden from teens, they'll be sent for prioritized review, and parents will be informed of the outcome.
Gradual Rollout of Updated Settings
The updated content settings are gradually being rolled out to Teen Accounts in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada today and will be fully implemented by the end of the year. Meta aims to reassure parents that they're committed to showing safe and age-appropriate content on Instagram while providing more ways for parents to shape their teen's experience.
The introduction of these measures reflects Meta's commitment to improving over time while acknowledging no system is perfect. They hope this update reassures parents about their efforts in maintaining a safe environment for teens on Instagram.
