Meta Could End Facebook Messenger and Instagram Cross-App Messaging This Year
In a move that could disappoint many users, Meta is reportedly planning to shut down cross-app messaging between Instagram and Facebook Messenger later this year. The feature, which allows users to send messages and make calls to each other regardless of which app they are using, is expected to be discontinued in mid-October.
App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, also known as @alex193a, recently revealed that Meta is planning to discontinue cross-app messaging between Instagram and Facebook Messenger. According to Paluzzi, this feature is on its way out, with an expected shutdown date in mid-October.

The Announcement and Its Implications
According to a screenshot shared by Alessandro Paluzzi on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram will stop allowing users to chat with Facebook friends after mid-October. The screenshot shows a message that says, "After mid-October, you will no longer be able to chat with Facebook friends on Instagram. This chat will become read-only. To continue the conversation, start a new chat on Messenger or Facebook."
This message implies that after the shutdown, users will no longer be able to have active conversations with Facebook friends on Instagram. Instead, these conversations will be archived and can only be read. It is unclear whether Meta plans to delete these conversations in the future.
A Brief History of Cross-App Messaging
Meta introduced cross-app messaging between Instagram and Messenger in September 2020. The goal was to make it easier for users to respond to messages and chat with friends without having to switch between the two apps.
In other words, if you were using Instagram and received a message on Messenger, you didn't have to leave Instagram and open Messenger to respond. This feature allowed you to continue your conversation without interruption. The same was true for responding to Instagram DMs while using Facebook.
The Lack of Official Announcement
Meta has not yet made an official statement about the discontinuation of this feature. Only time will tell how Meta's decision to shut down cross-app messaging will impact users. However, it is clear that this is a significant change that is likely to have a major impact on Meta's messaging platforms.
