Microsoft 365 Desktop Apps Could Be Free—If You Don’t Mind Ads!
Microsoft is experimenting with a free, ad-supported version of Office for Windows. This version allows access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other apps without the Microsoft 365 subscription fee. Currently, users must subscribe to Microsoft 365 for full desktop access. The ad-supported version has been spotted in India, indicating a potential wider release.
The ad-supported Office includes permanent banners and 15-second video ads that play periodically. Users must store documents on OneDrive as local storage is disabled. This version lacks full features; Word misses drawing tools and line spacing options, Excel lacks add-ins and macros, and PowerPoint doesn't support dictation or custom slides.

Testing and Features
Microsoft's spokesperson stated that the company is conducting limited testing of this ad-supported Office version. There are no current plans to launch it widely. However, the apps have been adapted to work with ads on Windows, suggesting possible future expansion into more markets.
Currently, Microsoft offers free Office versions only through web browsers. These online versions are more limited compared to the desktop apps. The test version for Windows also doesn't provide all features available in the paid subscription.
AI Integration in Microsoft 365
Previously, Microsoft began integrating AI-powered features into its Microsoft 365 subscriptions in select countries before expanding globally. This rollout included price increases alongside new functionalities.
Tom Warren, a senior editor at Notepad with over two decades of experience covering Microsoft and tech topics, reported these developments. His insights highlight Microsoft's strategic moves in offering varied Office experiences across different platforms.
This initiative reflects Microsoft's ongoing efforts to diversify its product offerings while exploring new revenue models through advertising. As testing continues, users may see further changes in how they can access and use Office applications on Windows systems.
