Microsoft’s Copilot Mode for Edge Lets AI Take Control of Your Tabs: And It's Just Getting Started!

Microsoft has begun testing a new experimental feature called Copilot Mode in its Edge browser. This AI-driven mode allows Copilot to search through all open tabs and perform tasks such as booking a restaurant. Additionally, it integrates the Copilot chatbot into the new tab page, enhancing user experience.

Copilot Mode offers functionality between Google's limited Gemini integration in Chrome and Comet's AI-powered browser overhaul. Users can allow Copilot to access all open tabs, enabling it to compare hotels or summarize the best purchase options from multiple product tabs.

AI-Powered Features in Edge

The new features build on Microsoft's existing AI assistant integration in Edge and its work with Copilot Vision. "Copilot will soon be able to guide you in your tasks and organize your browsing — past and present — into helpful, topic-based journeys," says Sean Lyndersay, vice president of product for Microsoft Edge.

Voice navigation is also supported by Copilot in Edge, allowing users to find information on websites or open tabs with products for comparison. Microsoft plans to enable Copilot to access browser history and credentials, with user permission, for booking reservations.

User Control and Future Plans

For those uninterested in this AI-powered mode, Microsoft assures that it will remain optional. "With Copilot Mode, you can also choose to turn the experience on and off as you wish through your Edge settings," Lyndersay states. Users can continue browsing as usual if they opt not to activate it.

Microsoft describes Copilot Mode as an "experimental" feature that will evolve over time. It is currently "free for a limited time," with usage limits on certain features. This indicates that Microsoft may eventually link this mode to a subscription service.

Tom Warren, a senior editor at Notepad with over 20 years of experience covering Microsoft, PC, and tech topics, reports on these developments. His insights provide valuable context for understanding Microsoft's latest innovations. This new mode represents Microsoft's ongoing efforts to enhance user experience through AI technology while offering flexibility for those who prefer traditional browsing methods.
