Microsoft Finally Fixes the Edge Glitch That Imported Chrome Tabs Without Asking

Microsoft has recently addressed an issue that inadvertently resulted in Google Chrome tabs being imported into Microsoft Edge without user consent. The fix, which marks the first acknowledgment by Microsoft of the problem, comes after The Verge highlighted the peculiar behavior affecting users of Edge.

In a detailed observation by The Verge Senior Editor Tom Warren in late January, it was noted that after updating his system, Edge would launch with tabs recently used in Chrome. This led to the discovery of a feature within Edge that could be toggled to "Always have access to your recent browsing data each time you browse on Microsoft Edge." Despite the feature's existence, reports surfaced on Microsoft's support forum and social media about Chrome tabs being imported into Edge without this setting being activated.

Microsoft's Response and Update

While Microsoft initially did not comment on the issue, a recent update released on February 15 has apparently fixed the issue at hand. According to Microsoft's release notes, the feature designed to import browser data from other browsers with user consent was experiencing syncing issues across devices. However, this statement does not fully address reports from users who encountered the issue without having the feature enabled.

The resolution of this issue by Microsoft suggests that the unintended behavior was not part of a deliberate strategy to encourage Edge usage among Chrome users. This is significant, given Microsoft's history of employing various tactics to promote Edge over other browsers, including persistent pop-up messages discouraging the download of Chrome or changing the default browser.

Competition in the Browser Market

Both Edge and Chrome operate on the Chromium browsing engine, yet Chrome maintains a substantial lead in market share. According to Global Statcounter data, Chrome held a 64.41 percent market share last month, with Safari and Edge trailing at 18.82 and 5.36 percent, respectively.
