Microsoft’s Forgotten Notepad Gets its Biggest Update Since its Inception in 1983
Microsoft is enhancing Notepad with AI-driven text editing capabilities. This feature, known as Rewrite, is being introduced in preview for Windows Insiders. It allows users to "rephrase sentences, adjust tone, and modify the length of your content," as stated on the Windows Insider Blog. This update marks a significant development for Notepad, which was first launched in 1983.
To use the Rewrite feature, Windows Insiders can highlight the desired text in Notepad, right-click it, and select Rewrite. A dialogue box will then appear, offering options to change the text's length or style. Users can choose from three rewritten versions to replace their original content. This feature requires signing into a Microsoft account as it operates through a cloud-based service that needs authentication.

AI Image Editing Tools in Paint
In addition to Notepad's new capabilities, Microsoft is also testing AI image editing tools in Paint. These tools were previewed last month and are now available for Insiders to try. The Generative Fill feature lets users add elements to an image based on a prompt, while Generative Erase can remove parts of an image and seamlessly blend the remaining space.
The Generative Fill tool will initially be accessible to testers using Copilot Plus PCs. However, Generative Erase will be available to all Windows 11 Insiders. These features aim to provide more creative flexibility when editing images within Paint.
Availability and Requirements
The Rewrite feature is currently being rolled out in preview on Windows 11 across several countries including the US, France, UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. It's important for users to note that they must be signed into their Microsoft accounts to access this functionality due to its reliance on cloud services.
In July, Microsoft enhanced Notepad by adding spell check and autocorrect features. These updates are part of Microsoft's ongoing efforts to improve user experience by integrating advanced technologies into their software offerings.
"Generative Fill will 'initially' roll out to testers with Copilot Plus PCs," according to Microsoft. Meanwhile, all Insiders on Windows 11 will have access to Generative Erase. These advancements reflect Microsoft's commitment to leveraging AI for more intuitive and efficient software solutions.
