Microsoft Is Ending Android App Support on Windows, Here’s What It Means for You
Microsoft is pulling the plug on Android app support for Windows 11. This decision comes after two years of offering Android apps through the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11. The Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), introduced in 2021, will no longer be part of Windows 11's feature set in 2025.
The Amazon App Store Transition
Windows 11 users had the ability to install Android apps on their laptops through the Amazon App Store, a strategy Microsoft adopted after Google introduced Android app support on Chromebooks and Apple integrated iOS apps into their new M-series MacBooks.

Timeline for Transition
Existing users of the Amazon App Store have a one-year grace period to continue using their installed apps, with the ability to receive updates until March 25, 2024. However, as of March 7, 2024, new users will be unable to search for the Amazon App Store and associated apps.
Collaboration with Amazon for a Smooth Transition
In collaboration with Amazon, Microsoft aims to ensure a smooth transition for both customers and developers of Android apps on Windows 11. Amazon has committed to halting the acceptance of new apps into the Amazon App Store starting March 5, 2024. Developers with existing apps can submit updates until March 25, 2024, when both the WSA and Amazon App Store will be fully discontinued.
Why the Change?
While the Amazon App Store served as Microsoft's response to Chromebooks and M-series MacBooks, it did not provide the same direct access to Android apps as the Play Store. This divergence in user experience, coupled with Microsoft's intensified focus on AI features and Copilot upgrades, likely contributed to the decision to terminate support for Android apps on Windows 11.
What Happens to Existing Users?
Those who already have Android apps from the Amazon Appstore can continue using them until March 2025. However, no new apps or updates will be available after that date.
