Microsoft to Shut Down Skype by May 2025—Here’s How to Move to Teams

Microsoft is set to retire Skype by May 5, 2025, marking the end of a service that revolutionized online communication. Since its launch in 2003, Skype was a go-to platform for video calls, voice calls, and messaging, making long-distance communication more accessible. However, its relevance has declined, particularly after Microsoft’s acquisition in 2011, as newer platforms took center stage.

With Microsoft Teams gaining traction, the company is shifting focus, consolidating its communication tools under one ecosystem. Despite Skype’s 36 million active users in 2023, the company believes Teams is the future of digital collaboration.

Microsoft to Shut Down Skype by May 2025—Here’s How to Move to Teams

Why Microsoft Is Moving Away from Skype

Since its launch, Teams has positioned itself as a more comprehensive alternative to Skype. It not only includes one-on-one and group calls but also supports file sharing, meeting hosting, calendar integration, and community creation—all at no cost.

The transition gained momentum during the pandemic, as remote work and virtual meetings surged, leading to a fourfold increase in Teams’ user base. Microsoft’s decision to phase out Skype is part of a broader strategy to offer an integrated platform that aligns with modern workplace demands.

How to Transition to Microsoft Teams

For existing Skype users, Microsoft is ensuring a smooth migration to Teams. Users will be able to log in to Teams using their existing Skype credentials, with chats and contacts automatically carried over.

The transition process is simple:

  1. Download Teams from Microsoft’s website.
  2. Log in with Skype credentials.
  3. Access existing chats and contacts directly within Teams.

To maintain connectivity, Microsoft is also enabling cross-platform calling between Teams and Skype during the transition.

What Happens to Skype’s Paid Services?

With Skype Credit and subscriptions being discontinued, users will have until the end of their next renewal period to utilize their remaining balance. After that, the Skype Dial Pad will remain accessible within Teams and the Skype web portal, ensuring that users can still make calls.
