Netflix is Bringing Video Games to Smart TVs for the First Time: Here's How You Can Play With Friends

Netflix has introduced a new feature allowing subscribers to enjoy games on their smart TVs. This development, initiated in early 2023, includes titles such as Pictionary: Game Night, Boggle Party, and Tetris Time Warp. These games are accessible through the Games tab on the Netflix TV app. Subscribers can play these games in groups using their phones as controllers.

The streaming giant's latest move is part of its strategy to diversify beyond traditional movies and TV shows. Although Netflix has offered games for several years, they were previously restricted to mobile devices. The introduction of gaming on smart TVs marks a significant expansion of their gaming offerings.

Netflix Games on Smart TVs

With the recent update to the Netflix app, subscribers can now play various games on their smart TVs. The update allows users to select a game by navigating to the Games tab within the app. This feature relies on a phone controller app, enabling users to use their phones as controllers for gameplay.

The initial selection of games available includes Lego Party!, Pictionary: Game Night, Boggle Party, Tetris Time Warp, and Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends. These titles support multiplayer modes, making them perfect for group play.

Multiplayer Gaming Experience

Boggle Party accommodates up to eight players who compete by finding words in a scrambled letter grid. Lego Party offers mini-games where players search for gold in themed Challenge Zones. Pictionary: Game Night is reminiscent of the classic drawing game available in physical form.

Tetris Time Warp takes players on a time-travel adventure through Tetris history, aiming for high scores across different eras. Meanwhile, Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends challenges players to identify one participant faking it based on peculiar clues.

Expanding Gaming Horizons

Netflix has been involved in gaming for four years but initially limited its offerings to mobile platforms. In 2023, the company launched the Netflix Game Controller app for iOS devices. This app enables users to use their phones as controllers while playing games on TV screens.
