OpenAI Announces 12-Day Event Ahead of the Festive Season: What to Expect?
OpenAI is gearing up for a festive season with a series of announcements. Starting from December 5, the company will unveil new features, products, and demonstrations over 12 days. Among these is the anticipated text-to-video AI tool, Sora, and a new reasoning model. These details were shared by sources familiar with OpenAI's plans.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed this 12-day event during The New York Times' DealBook conference. However, he refrained from revealing specific details about what would be launched. The company intends to introduce or showcase something new each day throughout this period.

OpenAI's Festive Countdown
In anticipation of the launch, some OpenAI staff have been hinting at upcoming releases on social media. A technical team member asked followers about their Christmas lists, while another mentioned setting up a "shipmas tree." Bill Peebles, who leads Sora, affirmed a colleague's post about OpenAI being "unbelievably back" with a simple "Correct." The senior vice president also chimed in with "IYKYK" (if you know, you know).
The release of Sora follows closely after artists leaked the model in protest against its use by OpenAI for what they describe as "unpaid R&D and PR." Since early 2024, hundreds of artists have been testing Sora through an invite-only research preview that lets them create videos using the tool.
Competition in Generative AI Video Models
Google has introduced its generative AI video model called Veo ahead of Sora's release. Businesses can now integrate Veo into their content creation processes. Initially revealed in May, three months after OpenAI announced Sora, Veo is currently available through Google's Vertex AI platform in a private preview.
Mira Murati, former CTO of OpenAI, had informed The Wall Street Journal in March that Sora would be accessible by year-end. This aligns with the current timeline for its official unveiling.
ChatGPT's Holiday Surprise
Among the potential announcements during OpenAI's 12-day spree might be a Santa-themed voice for ChatGPT. Some users have noticed code changes that swap the voice mode button with a snowflake icon.
The excitement surrounding these developments reflects OpenAI's commitment to innovation and user engagement during this festive period. As each day unfolds, more insights into these advancements will become available to users and enthusiasts alike.
