OpenAI Announces Faster ChatGPT-4o AI Model for Free Alongside a New Desktop App

OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence (AI) firm, recently made headlines with its Spring Update event. The event, held online and in front of a select live audience, served as a platform for several significant announcements.

These include the launch of a new ChatGPT desktop app, updates to the web client interface, and the introduction of a superior AI model named GPT-4o. Additionally, OpenAI declared that all features of the GPT-4, previously exclusive to premium users, are now accessible to everyone free of charge.

ChatGPT Desktop App and Revamped Interface

At the forefront of the event was Mira Murati, the Chief Technical Officer at OpenAI. She introduced the ChatGPT desktop app enhanced with computer vision capabilities, allowing the AI to analyze and interact with the user's screen content.

This feature can be toggled on or off by users. The web version of ChatGPT also received a makeover, sporting a minimalist design and new suggestion cards for an improved user experience.

The update has made the interface more user-friendly, with smaller icons and a design that maximizes screen space for conversations. A notable upgrade is ChatGPT's new ability to access web browsers and deliver real-time search results.

Introducing ChatGPT-4o

The highlight of the event was the unveiling of GPT-4o, OpenAI's latest flagship AI model. The 'o' in GPT-4o stands for omni-model, reflecting its enhanced capabilities.

According to Murati, this new model is twice as fast, costs 50% less, and supports five times higher rate limits than the GPT-4 Turbo model. GPT-4o boasts improvements in latency, enabling real-time responses, even in speech mode.

It can generate more human-like responses with emotive voice modulations and react to the user's emotions. For example, it can detect panic in a user's voice and respond in a concerned manner.

Additionally, GPT-4o's computer vision has been upgraded to process and respond to live video feeds, aiding in tasks like solving mathematical equations with step-by-step guidance or offering instant analysis and suggestions for large coding data.

The model can also recognize emotions when users interact with the camera on. In a demonstration, GPT-4o showcased its capability to perform live voice translations and speak multiple languages sequentially.

ChatGPT-4 Available for Free

Moreover, OpenAI announced that the GPT-4 model, along with its advanced features, is now free for all users. This move enables access to GPTs (mini chatbots for specific tasks), GPT Store, and the Memory feature, which allows the AI to recall user-specific information for future interactions, without any cost.

Users can also leverage its advanced data analytics freely. This series of updates from OpenAI not only enhances the user experience but also democratizes access to advanced AI tools, marking a significant step in the AI landscape.
