OpenAI CEO Introduces New ChatGPT Feature That Can Reference and Remember All Your Previous Chats
OpenAI has introduced an enhanced memory feature for ChatGPT, allowing the AI chatbot to recall all previous interactions. This improvement aims to provide users with more personalised responses by considering their preferences and interests. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted this development, stating it enhances the chatbot's ability to assist with writing, advice, learning, and more.
The updated memory feature is currently being rolled out to ChatGPT Pro users and will soon be available for ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Additionally, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users can expect access in a few weeks. However, there is no information on when or if free users will receive this feature.

Memory Feature Availability
Altman clarified that this feature would not be available in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. The memory capability isn't entirely new; it was initially introduced in September 2024 for various user tiers but has now been significantly improved.
Previously, ChatGPT had limitations on how much context it could retain. With the latest update, it can remember all past conversations with users. This enhancement makes interactions feel smoother and more tailored to individual needs.
User Control Over Memory
Users have control over this memory feature. They can opt out of it entirely or choose not to reference past chats. To disable the feature, navigate to Settings > Personalisation > Memory and toggle it off. Users can also manage stored memories or clear them completely.
For those who prefer not to use memory during a conversation, temporary chat is available as an option. Altman emphasised that users are always in control of what ChatGPT remembers about them.
Enhanced Personalisation
This new capability allows ChatGPT to build upon existing knowledge from previous interactions. It delivers responses that are noticeably more relevant and useful by referencing past chats. OpenAI expressed excitement about AI systems evolving into highly personalised tools over time.
"This is a surprisingly great feature imo [in my opinion], and it points at something we are excited about: AI systems that get to know you over your life and become extremely useful and personalised," Altman stated. The introduction of this improved memory function marks a significant step towards creating a personal AI agent for each user.
