OpenAI GPT-4.1 Models Now Available in ChatGPT, Making it Smarter and Faster
OpenAI has expanded its GPT-4.1 series of AI models to ChatGPT, previously limited to the company's API. The San Francisco-based firm announced that both GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini models are now available in the chatbot. These models are designed for enhanced coding tasks and serve as an alternative to the o3 model.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI confirmed that the GPT-4.1 model is now accessible directly in ChatGPT. It is positioned as an alternative to the o3 model, particularly for coding tasks, and excels in following instructions. This feature will be available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users through the "more models" dropdown menu.

GPT-4.1 Mini Model Access
The free tier of ChatGPT will soon have access to the GPT-4.1 mini model, which will replace the existing GPT-4o mini model. Enterprise and Edu subscribers can expect access to this model in the coming weeks.
OpenAI's internal testing revealed that these models surpass both GPT-4o and GPT-4.5 in coding capabilities. The company reported that GPT-4.1 achieved a 54.6 percent score on the SWE-bench Verified benchmark, demonstrating its proficiency in coding tasks.
Performance Benchmarks
The GPT-4.1 series also scored 38.3 percent on the MultiChallenge benchmark for instruction following and 72 percent on the Video-MME benchmark for multimodal long context understanding. These models boast a context window of up to one million tokens.
While GPT-4.1 remains the premium offering, the mini version also outperforms GPT-4o in several benchmarks, including intelligence evaluations. OpenAI highlighted that the mini model reduces latency by half and costs 83 percent less than 4o.
ChatGPT's GitHub Integration
ChatGPT's deep research feature now connects with GitHub repositories, enhancing its utility for developers and researchers alike.
The expansion of these AI models marks a significant development for OpenAI as it continues negotiations with Microsoft for new funding and a potential future IPO.
OpenAI is also exploring weekly and lifetime subscription plans for ChatGPT users, aiming to offer more flexible options for accessing their advanced AI tools. This strategic move reflects OpenAI's commitment to broadening access to its cutting-edge AI technologies while maintaining competitive pricing structures.
