OpenAI has announced the release of SearchGPT, a new AI-powered search engine designed to revolutionize the way users access information online. This new search tool, currently in its prototype phase, aims to offer a more organized and meaningful search experience compared to traditional search engines.

A New Approach to Searching

When users open SearchGPT, they are greeted with a large textbox asking, "What are you looking for?" Unlike conventional search engines that return a list of links, SearchGPT provides summaries of its findings with short descriptions and direct attribution links. For example, if you search for information on music festivals, SearchGPT will not only list events but also provide a brief overview of each one.

Collaboration with Publishers

To avoid issues similar to those faced by Perplexity, another AI-powered search engine, OpenAI has collaborated with several news organizations, including The Wall Street Journal, The Associated Press, and Vox Media. This collaboration aims to ensure that publishers can manage their content's appearance in search results and opt-out of having their content used for training OpenAI's models while still being searchable.

OpenAI emphasizes that SearchGPT prominently cites and links to sources, providing clear attribution so users can trust where the information is coming from. This approach is intended to help users engage more deeply with the content and enhance their overall search experience.

Addressing Costs and Future Challenges

The launch of SearchGPT comes amid reports of significant operational costs for OpenAI. Training and running AI models are expensive, with estimates suggesting costs could reach $7 billion this year. Despite these costs, SearchGPT will be free during its initial launch period, and the company has not yet introduced ads to the platform.
