PhonePe Unveils Indus Appstore In India With Regional Language Support
On Wednesday, PhonePe introduced its Android-based mobile app marketplace, the Indus Appstore, in India. The unveiling was carried out by the Communications, Electronics, and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a hybrid event. This new storefront marks PhonePe's endeavor to address the critical issue of insufficient regional language content in existing app marketplaces.
Multilingual Support
Indus Appstore stands out by offering support in English and 12 regional Indian languages. It features an innovative video-led app discovery, mobile number-based logins, and AI-driven app recommendations. The inclusion of regional languages such as Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and more makes the platform particularly appealing to a wide range of Indian users. The app store allows users to effortlessly switch between languages with a toggle button, changing not just the interface content but also app names, trailers, videos, and descriptions. This comprehensive localization effort was managed internally by PhonePe.

Furthermore, the platform incorporates a unique search functionality allowing users to conduct searches in any of the 12 supported languages, with transliterations in regional languages also yielding relevant results. According to PhonePe founder and CEO Sameer Nigam, the Indus Appstore launched with an impressive catalog of 200,000 apps, including major names like Flipkart, Disney+ Hotstar, Myntra, Zomato, Swiggy, and Snapchat. The store places a significant emphasis on gaming, categorizing offerings into casual, heavy, and real money gaming (RMG).
Developer-Friendly Policies
For developers, listing apps on the Indus Appstore will be free for the initial year, followed by an annual fee. In a move diverging from industry giants like Apple and Google, PhonePe announced that it will not levy any platform fees or commissions for in-app payments processed through external gateways. This decision offers a more lucrative prospect for developers, as conventional platforms charge between 15 percent and 25 percent commission and restrict the integration of alternative payment services.
Enhanced User and Developer Features
The platform also introduces several user and developer-friendly features, such as OTP-based logins, smart updates for quicker app version upgrades, and personalized storage management advising on app hibernation or deletion for unused apps. AI-based algorithms enhance app recommendations by factoring in user's location data. Additionally, app developers are given the autonomy to decide on the inclusion of ads within their apps, potentially earning commission from ad revenue.
This launch represents a notable development in the Indian app marketplace landscape, offering a tailored experience for both users and developers. By focusing on regional language support and developer incentives, the Indus Appstore is set to become a significant player in India's digital ecosystem.
