Some Google Drive Desktop Users Are Reporting Months of Missing Files

Google Drive, a popular cloud storage service, is facing backlash from users who discovered missing files due to a recent error in the desktop client. A support thread on Google Drive Help reveals numerous complaints from users who found their files, dating back several months in some instances, suddenly vanished. The issue primarily affects a "limited subset" of Google Drive for desktop users.

User Frustration Evident

The issue came to light when a Windows user reported that files from May onward had vanished from both their local folder and Google's server, according to The Register. The user's files were unable to be restored, even after contacting the support team. Over 300 users expressed similar worries on the support thread as a result of this incident.

Google's Response and Investigation

A Google representative acknowledged the issue and assured users that the company is actively investigating the problem. According to Google, the problem is related to a syncing issue with Google Drive desktop versions ranging from 84.0.0.0 to 84.0.4.0. Users experiencing this problem are advised not to delete local files or disconnect their accounts from within the Drive app.

Precautionary Measures for Users

In response to the ongoing issue, a Google Drive team member named Saitej provided precautionary steps for affected users. Users are cautioned against clicking "disconnect account" within the Google Drive for desktop and are advised not to delete or move the app data folder. The recommended locations for this folder are %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\DriveFS for Windows and ~/Library/Application Support/Google/DriveFS for macOS. Saitej further suggests creating a backup copy of the app folder to mitigate potential data loss.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the resolution timeline, affected users are urged to back up their files independently to prevent any further data loss. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of multiple backup strategies, even when utilizing trusted cloud storage services.
