Spotify is changing how users discover and share music with the introduction of Playlist Notes, a new feature designed to bring more human context to music discovery.

The new feature allows playlist creators, Spotify editors, and listeners to add notes to songs, podcasts, and audiobooks. Instead of relying entirely on algorithm-driven recommendations, users can now understand the story or context behind the audio they discover.

Spotify Editors Can Now Explain Why Songs Were Added

One of the biggest additions is the introduction of editor notes for Spotify's flagship playlists.

Spotify's global editorial teams can now add context to individual tracks, allowing listeners to understand why a particular song was selected. The notes can also highlight a song's cultural significance or explain its relevance to a playlist.

The feature is currently available on select major playlists, including Today's Top Hits and RapCaviar.

Spotify is also introducing Editor Profiles, allowing listeners to tap an editor's name and explore their profile. These pages can showcase the curator's personal favourite tracks and albums, offering users more insight into the people behind Spotify's editorial playlists.

The move could make Spotify's massive curated playlists feel less algorithmic and more personal.

Spotify Playlist Notes: Availability

Spotify's editor notes are currently limited by both age and location.

The feature is available to users aged 16 and above in select English-speaking markets, including:

• UK
• Ireland
• Australia
• New Zealand

Spotify has not yet confirmed when editor notes will expand to additional countries.

However, the user-facing Playlist Notes feature has a much wider rollout and is available across more than 100 markets on Android and iOS.

How to Add Playlist Notes on Spotify

Spotify is also allowing regular users to add their own notes to shared playlists.

To add a note, users can open a track's three-dot menu and select the option to add a note. The note can then provide additional context or a personal message for people viewing the shared playlist.

The feature is not limited to music. Users can also add notes to podcast episodes and audiobooks.

These annotations can be particularly useful for shared playlists created for road trips, parties, study sessions or other group activities. A song can now carry a personal memory or explanation alongside it, effectively turning a playlist into a digital scrapbook.
