Spotify Premium Subscription Prices Hiked In India And Other Regions: Here’s When It Goes Into Effect
Spotify has announced an increase in its Premium subscription prices in several regions, including India, starting September. This adjustment is part of the company's strategy to manage rising costs while continuing to invest in its platform. Users across South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific will experience higher monthly fees.
In India, the new pricing structure is already in effect. The Individual Premium plan now costs Rs 139 per month, up from Rs 119. The Duo plan for two accounts has increased from Rs 149 to Rs 179. Students will pay Rs 69 per month instead of Rs 59, and the Family plan has risen from Rs 179 to Rs 229, marking a significant 28% hike.

Spotify's Strategic Adjustments
This price change follows Spotify's recent modifications to its free service in India in October 2023. Some features were moved behind a paywall to encourage more paid subscriptions. A Spotify spokesperson stated, "As we continue to grow our platform, we are updating our Premium prices for new subscribers in India, from today."
The music streaming industry has seen some platforms exit or change ownership recently. Wynk, Resso, and Gaana have either left the market or undergone transitions. This leaves Spotify competing with services like YouTube Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music, JioSaavn, and Hungama.
Financial Performance and Market Potential
Spotify's global price update comes after reporting a 10% revenue increase year-on-year in its latest earnings. Despite this growth, the company faced a loss of 86 million Euros last quarter. Rising employee costs and "social charges," which are taxes linked to employee pay that increase with the company's share price, contributed to this loss.
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek highlighted earlier this year that India and other emerging markets could become significant revenue sources in the future. As some competitors have exited the market or changed hands, Spotify sees potential growth opportunities.
Customers affected by these changes will receive emails detailing the price adjustments and their implementation timeline over the coming weeks. The updated rates are now visible on Spotify's website across various Premium plans. This marks the first time since entering India in 2019 that Spotify has raised its subscription prices there.
