Spotify Wants You to Remix Songs With AI: New Roadmap Includes Fan-Made Covers, Interactive Music Tools
Spotify plans to let paying listeners legally create AI-made covers and remixes from selected catalogues, under new deals with Universal Music Group. The tool will appear as a paid extra for Spotify Premium customers, and will share revenue with participating artists and songwriters through licensing arrangements.
The announcement is part of Spotify’s wider artificial intelligence roadmap, presented during its 2026 Investor Day. Executives described generative AI as central to future growth, moving the company beyond simple music streaming and deeper into interactive, personalised experiences that can be sold as premium add-ons.

Spotify AI Music Tool and New Superfan Features
At the event, Spotify leaders said the service is shifting from pure recommendation algorithms to AI-shaped experiences. Planned features include prompted playlists, personalised podcast formats, and interactive fan tools that let listeners directly influence what they hear, including licensed AI reinterpretations of familiar tracks.
Spotify explained that the AI covers and remixes feature will rely on generative AI systems but remain licensed. Fans will be able to generate new versions of songs from artists and songwriters who opt into the scheme. Revenue from this paid add-on will be shared with those participants, alongside existing royalty streams.

Spotify AI Music Tool, Data Strategy, Growth Plans
Spotify co-president and chief product and technology officer Gustav Söderström said the company’s AI strategy will focus on using its detailed listener “taste” data rather than building separate large language models. Spotify plans to use AI to deliver more personalised listening experiences and drive growth through premium add-ons and interactive features aimed at highly engaged users.
Co-CEO Alex Norström said Spotify is working on AI-powered fan-made covers and remixes built around artist consent, credit, and compensation. He added that the initiative aims to create a richer experience for fans while improving outcomes for artists and songwriters.
Lucian Grainge said the AI-powered superfan initiative is designed to strengthen artist-fan relationships and create new revenue opportunities while remaining artist-centric and responsibly managed.
The new licensing agreements between Spotify and Universal Music Group aim to regulate AI-generated music content through consent, proper credit, and structured compensation instead of blocking such uses outright.
