Threads Testing Direct Messages: Here’s How the New Inbox Works
Meta's Threads will soon roll out a much-anticipated feature, allowing users to chat directly within the app. The platform has started testing Direct Messages (DMs) in select markets, aiming to enhance user interaction without needing to switch platforms.
Currently, Threads does not support direct messaging. However, the posts can be shared with followers; the process is routed through Instagram using the "Send on Instagram" option.

Threads Begins Testing DMs
Announcing the feature on Threads, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, "We're starting to test DMs on Threads. If you get access to this -- slide through!"
In another post, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said that ''We're starting to test DMs on Threads, which has been a top request since we launched. Our mission is to foster an open exchange of perspectives, and we know how important messaging is to supporting that cause.''
According to a report by The Verge, Threads will begin rolling out the DM feature this week in Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina. Meta also plans to expand the feature to additional regions in the near future.
Users will be able to access their dedicated Threads inbox by tapping the new envelope icon, which will be available on the bottom taskbar in the iPhone and Android apps, or on the left side of the screen when using the desktop version.
To recall, Instagram launched Threads for sharing text updates and joining public conversations. One can log in using their Instagram account, and posts can be up to 500 characters long and include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes in length.
