Truecaller to Discontinue iPhone Call Recording by September 30—Here’s Why That Makes Sense

If you’ve been using Truecaller to record calls on your iPhone, you’ve got a deadline: September 30. After that, the feature’s going away for good.

According to a report from TechCrunch, Truecaller confirmed it’s dropping the function to double down on what it does best—blocking spam and identifying calls in real time.

Why Call Recording on iPhone Was Always a Bit Clunky

Let’s be honest—call recording on iPhones has never been as smooth as it is on Android. Since Apple doesn’t let third-party apps tap into call audio directly, Truecaller had to route the call through a recording line and merge it manually.

It worked, but it wasn’t elegant. In its statement to TechCrunch, Nakul Kabra, Product Director for iOS at Truecaller, said the company is retiring the feature to focus on Live Caller ID and automatic spam blocking—the stuff users rely on every day.

You’ve Got Until September 30 to Back Things Up

If you’ve used Truecaller to save important conversations, you’ll still have time to move your recordings. The company says users can:

  • Download recordings to local storage
  • Share them via email or messaging apps
  • Or switch storage preference to iCloud, so files remain accessible even after the feature is removed

Truecaller’s also set up a support page in case anything goes sideways during the transition.

Apple’s Native Tools Might’ve Made This Redundant

This update comes just months after Apple added its own native call recording and transcription tools in iOS 18.1. Apple’s version doesn’t need a third-party workaround—it records directly, and uses its on-device AI for real-time transcriptions.

That likely tipped the scales. With a simpler built-in option now available, Truecaller’s iOS workaround started to look a little outdated.

What About Android?

Truecaller hasn’t confirmed whether the change affects Android yet. On Android, where OS-level restrictions are far fewer, call recording is still baked into the dialer with a straightforward button press or overlay.

That said, with the company realigning its priorities, it’s worth keeping an eye out in case further changes roll out down the line.

Still Worth Paying for Truecaller on iOS?

Truecaller’s premium tier has always been more than just call recording. Paid users get features like:

  • Real-time Live Caller ID
  • Advanced spam detection
  • Incognito mode
  • Siri shortcuts
  • And yes, call recording—at least until now

According to the report, 44% of the company’s total premium revenue comes from iOS, so this is a significant shift. Whether it affects subscription numbers will depend on how much users valued the feature.
