Twitter for Mac app will no longer have support from next month
While the official announcement comes just now, the death of the app was only a matter of time.
Twitter on Friday announced that it will pull the plug on its desktop Mac application in favor of a web client. Further, support for Twitter for Mac will be stopped in 30 days. We're focusing our efforts on a great Twitter experience that's consistent across platforms. So, starting today the Twitter for Mac app will no longer be available for download," @TwitterSupport posted.
"For the full Twitter experience on Mac, visit Twitter on Web," the handle added. However, we are not sure whether or not it will still function after that. Twitter for Mac has been struggling for a long time now as it failed to catch up with its rivals such as Tweetbot or Twitterific which have now taken over on macOS.
Interestingly, when the app was called "Tweetie", it was well received by users. Later Twitter purchased it and things started going downhill.
At the moment, the company recommends its users to visit the web version to get the full experience. While the official announcement comes just now, the death of the app was only a matter of time. Hardly anyone used the app as Apple was bringing a radical redesign to macOS to make it more similar to iOS.
While for Twitter it may not make much of a difference, Apple's Mac App Store platform could be in a bad state. Twitter is available on the Mac App Store, but you won't find many large applications in the App Store apart from Apple's own apps. In fact, the App Store is filled with useless apps, on the most part.
In any case, Twitter for Mac will no longer be available in a month. As stated, active Twitter users have already switched to better third-party applications.
Meanwhile, Twitter has recently enabled live stream feature for its users in the US. The micro-blogging site has joined hands with local news channels to source the streams. The first stream had more than 50,000 simultaneous viewers at its peak.
