What is Bharat Taxi? India’s New Cooperative Ride-Hailing App Aims to Take on Uber and Ola
Bharat Taxi is a newly launched ride-hailing platform in India that aims to challenge established private cab aggregators by adopting a cooperative, driver-first model. Currently operational across Delhi-NCR, the service promises transparent fares for passengers and higher take-home earnings for drivers, positioning itself as an alternative to platforms like Uber and Ola.
The platform has been launched with support from India's Ministry of Cooperation and is operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited. While it enjoys backing from large cooperative institutions such as Amul, Bharat Taxi is not a government-owned entity. Its core idea revolves around collective ownership, where drivers are stakeholders rather than contractors.

Cooperative Launch and Vision
Bharat Taxi was formally unveiled at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi by Union Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah. Speaking at the launch, Shah highlighted that the platform is designed to empower drivers by allowing them to retain profits and gain dignity through ownership. A rally of Bharat Taxi vehicles marked the event, underlining the cooperative's focus on driver participation.
Driver Earnings and Pricing Model
Unlike conventional ride-hailing apps that charge commissions on every trip, Bharat Taxi follows a no-commission structure. Drivers currently keep the full fare paid by passengers. According to CEO Vivek Pandey, the cooperative plans to introduce a small fixed daily fee of around ₹25-₹30 in the future, instead of per-ride commissions. This approach is intended to offer predictable costs and improved income stability. The platform also plans to facilitate government-backed loans to help drivers purchase their own vehicles.
Passenger Fares and Safety Features
For riders, Bharat Taxi promises clear and upfront pricing with no surge charges. Fares are displayed before booking, eliminating uncertainty during peak demand. On the safety front, the service has partnered with Delhi Police and Gujarat Police to enable verified drivers, real-time ride tracking, multilingual support, and 24/7 customer assistance. Integration with metro services is also planned to improve last-mile connectivity.
Currently live in Delhi-NCR after a pilot phase, Bharat Taxi is expected to expand to more cities and states in the coming months, betting on its cooperative model to reshape India's app-based cab ecosystem.
