What is Bitchat Mesh? Jack Dorsey’s Bluetooth-Based Messaging App is Now on iPhone
Jack Dorsey has introduced Bitchat Mesh, a Bluetooth-based messaging app for iPhone users. This new application, available on the App Store, allows users to communicate without internet access. It utilises a Bluetooth mesh network for connectivity and supports end-to-end encryption (E2EE) and identity verification. The app's launch follows Dorsey's recent unveiling of a peer-to-peer app developed over a weekend.
The Bitchat Mesh app employs the Noise protocol framework to ensure E2EE protection for messages. Users can verify each other's identities by comparing account "fingerprints" in person or through another online channel. Once verified, users can mark contacts as "verified" within the app. The app's description highlights its ability to function without internet access by relying on direct connections and message relays through other peers.

Bitchat Mesh Features and Availability
Bitchat Mesh offers a simple interface reminiscent of older text-based Internet Relay Chat (IRC) services. Users can mark favourites, mention others, and block unwanted contacts. The app does not require accounts or servers, ensuring user privacy by not collecting any data. It is compatible with iOS 16 and newer versions, while support for Android devices running version 8.0+ is anticipated.
A security notice on the Bitchat website advises caution when using private (1:1) chats, as they have not undergone an external security review. Users are encouraged to avoid using these chats for sensitive purposes until further security measures are implemented.
Technical Details and Future Plans
Currently, Bitchat Mesh is available only for iPhone users via the App Store. However, Android users can explore APK releases linked on the project's GitHub page before the official Play Store release. This allows technically inclined individuals to experiment with the app ahead of its wider availability.
The App Store listing confirms that Bitchat Mesh operates independently of accounts or servers, enhancing user privacy by not collecting any data from its users. This feature aligns with Dorsey's emphasis on consumer privacy and open-source technology.
As of now, there is no announcement regarding when Bitchat Mesh will be available on the Play Store for Android devices. Interested users can stay updated through official channels for further developments regarding the app's release on additional platforms.
Bitchat Mesh represents a significant step towards decentralised communication solutions that prioritise user privacy and security. By eliminating reliance on internet connectivity and traditional identifiers like phone numbers or email addresses, it offers a unique approach to messaging in today's digital landscape.
