WhatsApp Adds Instagram-Inspired Features: Private Mentions, Status Likes, and More

WhatsApp, the ubiquitous messaging app owned by Meta, is taking a page out of Instagram's playbook with a series of new features designed to make its Status feature more engaging. These updates aim to spark more interaction and connection within the platform.

Private Mentions and Reshares

One key addition is the ability to privately mention contacts in your Status updates. Similar to tagging in Instagram Stories, this allows you to subtly highlight someone in your post without it being publicly visible. The mentioned user will receive a notification, and they can even reshare your Status update if they choose. This fosters a more personal touch within Statuses, encouraging direct communication between individuals.

Likes for Appreciation (Without the Pressure)

Another nod to Instagram is the introduction of a "like" function for Statuses. Gone are the days of simply viewing someone's update in silence. Now, a simple tap of a new green heart button lets you express your appreciation for a friend's or family member's Status.

However, unlike Instagram, these likes are private and don't come with a public counter. Only the person who posted the Status can see who liked it, eliminating the pressure of "like" counts.

Rolling Out Globally Soon

WhatsApp has confirmed that these new features are rolling out globally and will be available to all users in the near future. In addition to the private mentions and status likes, the company has teased that more updates will be coming to the Status and Updates tabs in the months ahead.

What Else is New?

Alongside the status updates, WhatsApp is introducing background filters for video calls, along with augmented reality (AR) photo filters, taking cues from Instagram's feature set.
