WhatsApp Enhances Privacy with Secret Codes for Locked Chats
WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has introduced a new feature aimed at bolstering user privacy on its messaging platform. The newly launched "secret codes" functionality provides an extra layer of security to locked conversations, allowing users to set a unique password distinct from their device unlock code.
Mark Zuckerberg Announces the Feature
Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder and CEO of Meta, announced the new Chat Lock feature on WhatsApp. Through a post on his WhatsApp Channel, Zuckerberg expressed that the secret code for Chat Lock adds an extra level of protection to users' private conversations. This new feature allows users to set their locked chats to only appear when the secret code is entered in the search bar, ensuring inadvertent discoveries are minimized.

How Secret Codes Work
Users have the flexibility to decide whether they want to hide the Locked Chats folder from their chat list or display it. By choosing to lock the folder, locked chats become discoverable solely by entering the secret code in the search bar. This approach prevents anyone with access to the device from unintentionally stumbling upon private conversations.
Rollout and Future Availability
The rollout of the secret code feature started yesterday and will be available globally over the next few months. WhatsApp aims to provide users with choices that strengthen privacy while maintaining a user-friendly experience.
Background on Locked Chats and Future Plans
Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced the Chat Lock feature, which allows users to lock specific chats and store them in a dedicated folder that can only be accessed with the device password, face ID, or fingerprint. The addition of secret codes fulfills Meta's commitment to giving users the ability to create a custom password for their chats, providing a different layer of security than their device password.
