WhatsApp Group Privacy Setting Update Rolled Out Globally For Android, iOS

WhatsApp announced that it was rolling out the updated group privacy settings globally. The new setting is believed to give users additional control on who they can add to a group. The WhatsApp group setting update was initially spotted by beta users, which is available to both iOS and Android users.

The WhatsApp group privacy setting aims to give more power to the user, the company said in a blog post. The updated setting includes three new options, namely 'Everyone', 'My Contacts', and 'My Contacts Except...'. The 'My Contacts Except...' option replaces the older 'Nobody' option in the group privacy setting.

The WhatsApp group privacy setting can be updated in the Settings menu of the app. Here, select Account>Privacy>Groups. "Today, we're introducing a new privacy setting and invite system to help you decide who can add you to groups," WhatsApp said. The newly added 'My Contacts Except...' option allows users to select the contacts they can add to a group.

The updated WhatsApp group privacy setting allows group admins to send the restricted users a private invite in a separate chat. The user will then have three days to accept the group invitation before it expires. The three-day time limit is to allow users to decide if they want to join that group or not.

WhatsApp had received backlash from users who wanted a setting to prevent spam group invites. Users had requested privacy settings specifically for groups. Hence, in April, WhatsApp rolled out the 'Nobody' option. This gave users the choice to approve if they wanted to join a WhatsApp group to which they were invited.

WhatsApp said it has launched the updated group privacy settings "based on feedback from users during our initial rollout, instead of the "Nobody" option we are now providing a 'My Contacts Except' option." The update follows the recent WhatsApp Pegasus spyware issue, where many were targetted with the spyware.
