WhatsApp Introduces Ads in Status, Paid Channels for Creators

After years of speculation, WhatsApp is officially introducing ads into its app—but not where you might expect. Starting soon, users will begin seeing ads in the Status section under the Updates tab.

The move is part of a broader update that also includes Channel subscriptions and Promoted Channels, as WhatsApp inches closer to becoming a business discovery platform.

Ads in Status, Not in Chats

The ads won’t appear in personal chats, groups, or calls. Instead, they’ll show up between Status updates, letting users explore products and services from businesses and creators.

According to WhatsApp, this update is designed to help brands connect with users more effectively, without interfering with the core messaging experience.

What Data Will Be Used?

Ads will be personalised using limited data like your country, language, and followed Channels. WhatsApp says it may also use ad preferences from your connected Meta accounts, provided you've linked them through the Accounts Centre.

However, the platform has clarified that your phone number, private messages, and call logs will not be shared with advertisers.

Channel Subscriptions and Promotions

In addition to ads, WhatsApp is also rolling out paid Channel subscriptions. This allows users to support their favourite Channels in exchange for exclusive content or updates.

Admins will also be able to promote their Channels in the directory to gain more visibility, similar to how creators boost posts on platforms like Instagram.
