WhatsApp Introduces Safety Overview Feature To Enhance User Protection Against Scams
WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Safety Overview to combat scams. This tool activates when an unknown contact adds you to a group. It provides details about the group and offers safety tips against phishing attempts. The Meta-owned app has banned over 6.8 million scam-related accounts as part of its ongoing security measures.
Meta's newsroom post detailed the Safety Overview tool's functionality. When added to an unfamiliar group, users can see information about the person who added them, the group's total members, its creator, and creation date. This allows users to decide whether to remain in or leave the group.

Enhanced User Protection
If users recognise the group from the provided information, they can explore chats for more context. However, WhatsApp allows users to exit without viewing any messages if they choose not to stay. Notifications from such groups remain muted until users confirm their decision to stay.
WhatsApp is also testing a feature for individual chats with unknown contacts. This feature will offer additional context about the user when initiating a chat with someone not saved in your contacts. This aims to help users make informed decisions before engaging in conversations.
Collaborative Efforts Against Scams
The platform's efforts extend beyond individual features. WhatsApp has collaborated with Meta and OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, to tackle scams linked to centres in Cambodia. These scams involved using ChatGPT for fraudulent activities like fake likes payments and cryptocurrency investments.
In addition to these measures, WhatsApp continues its crackdown on scam accounts. The company recently banned over 6.8 lakh accounts associated with scam centres, demonstrating its commitment to user safety.
The introduction of these features underscores WhatsApp's dedication to safeguarding its user base from potential threats and scams while enhancing overall user experience on the platform.
