WhatsApp Is Testing a New Meta AI Widget for Instant AI Access on Your Home Screen
WhatsApp is experimenting with a new Meta AI widget for Android devices, signaling its ongoing push to incorporate artificial intelligence into everyday communication. The feature, first reported by WABetaInfo, introduces a widget that brings AI tools to users' fingertips, making interactions more seamless and accessible.
While still in beta and limited to select regions and users, this update reflects Meta's broader ambitions for AI integration across its platforms.

A Widget Built for Simplicity and Speed
The Meta AI widget offers two key functionalities. On one side, users can tap a text field to chat directly with the AI, asking questions or engaging in interactive conversations. On the other, a camera button allows instant photo capture and sharing for AI analysis or editing.
Designed as a 4x1 grid layout, the new widget complements WhatsApp's existing widgets without replacing them. Unlike earlier versions, which offered more basic interactions, this upgrade focuses on enhancing usability and embedding AI capabilities into daily routines.
New AI Features in the Works
In addition to the widget, WhatsApp is reportedly developing a dedicated "AI chats" tab for the app's bottom navigation bar. This tab will serve as a central hub for users to access Meta AI's full range of tools. Powered by Meta's Llama 3.1 model, the AI goes beyond simple chatbot functions, offering advanced features like language translation, content summarization, and even image creation.
One standout feature of the widget is its ability to analyze images and provide context-aware responses. Users can ask Meta AI to edit a photo, explain its content, or even answer questions related to the image.
Limited Rollout for Now
As with many tech rollouts, access to these new features will be gradual. Meta AI is currently available only to select users in certain regions, and the widget will follow the same approach. While no official timeline has been shared for a wider release, users can expect a phased deployment as WhatsApp tests and refines the feature.
