WhatsApp May Replace Two-Step Verification PIN With Password

WhatsApp may soon introduce a significant security upgrade by replacing its existing six-digit two-step verification PIN with a dedicated password. According to a recent report, the Meta-owned messaging platform is working on a feature that would allow users to create a stronger alphanumeric password, offering better protection for their accounts.

The feature is still under development and has not been released to beta testers yet. If it arrives, it is expected to remain an optional security setting, just like the current two-step verification feature.

WhatsApp May Replace Numeric PIN With Password

According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is developing a new version of its two-step verification system that replaces the current six-digit PIN with a password containing both letters and numbers.

The move could significantly improve account security by making passwords more difficult to guess or crack than a simple numeric PIN. It would also align WhatsApp with modern authentication practices adopted by other online services.

The feature could prove particularly useful for users who store sensitive conversations, share confidential documents, or use WhatsApp for financial transactions.

Will Everyone Need to Use It?

At the moment, WhatsApp's two-step verification is completely optional, and that is unlikely to change. Users who haven't enabled the feature are expected to remain unaffected if the password option is introduced.

Since the feature is still in the early stages of development, there is also a possibility that WhatsApp could modify it or even cancel it before the public rollout.

How to Manage WhatsApp Two-Step Verification

Users can already enable or manage two-step verification directly from the app by following these steps:

Open WhatsApp.
Tap Settings (or your profile picture).
Select Account.
Tap Two-step verification.
Choose Turn On, Turn Off, or Change PIN.
You can also update the recovery email address linked to the feature.

WhatsApp Is Working on More New Features

The password-based authentication is one of several features reportedly in development for WhatsApp.

The messaging platform has recently been spotted testing username support across both Android and iOS, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. The feature is currently available to a limited number of users.

Separately, WhatsApp is also said to be testing a new shortcut in iOS version 26.27.74, making it easier for users to switch between Apple's microphone modes during voice and video calls.

While none of these features have been officially announced by WhatsApp, they indicate that the company is continuing to strengthen both security and user experience across its messaging platform.
